Project Success
The Xiangtan Bubugao Plaza (Phase II) is located at the intersection of Jianshe Road in Xiangtan City. Its dome covers approximately 6,000 square meters, spanning the eight-story rooftop of Phase II and connecting to the curtain wall of Phase I. A central sun valley extends to the seventh-floor accessible floor. Some of the main trees feature forked branches. The steel columns descend to the fourth floor, creating a smooth, arched surface. The entire structure of the canopy is approximately 110m long and 50m wide. The roof membrane is oriented to the left, with the longest structural unit being approximately 80m.
When designing the membrane structure, considering the operability of installation and the feasibility of tensioning, the length of the membrane strip unit was controlled to not exceed 50m, and the width was normally about 2m. The entire dome consists of about 140 membrane units.
In this single-layer ETFE project, two types of ETFE materials were used, with the 250μm blue dot ETFE material being the main material, accounting for 80% of the total area.
Considering the high intensity of sunlight in summer, the architect designed to distribute 20% of the entire roof surface with 250μm white frosted ETFE material. This means that on each long strip membrane unit, which is several tens of square meters, one or more triangular, prismatic, or trapezoidal frosted membrane membranes will be arranged. Each piece of frosted film is controlled to have an area of 1-3 square meters. The use of double ETFE materials not only reduces light intensity, achieving an environmentally friendly effect, but also creates a unique visual effect, enhancing the design.
